Chris & Cosey / Carter Tutti BIOGRAPHY Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti formed CHRIS & COSEY out of the ashes of their seminal 70s' Industrial band Throbbing Gristle. Throbbing Gristle (and Carter & Tutti) founded the Industrial music genre and were one of the first bands to successfully fuse electronic and acoustic instrumentation. Their musical legacy is still very much in evidence today. When Throbbing Gristle was terminated in 1981 Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti signed to Rough Trade Records and began recording and performing as CHRIS & COSEY. From the very start they indulgently utilised electronics, sampling, rhythms and Cosey's distinctive vocals, cornet and guitar style. In 1983 they formed their own offshoot record label Conspiracy International (aka: CTI) for their more experimental recordings and collaborative projects. CTI continues to run alongside CARTER and TUTTI's more accessible work. Regularly cited as one of the original forerunners of the Techno and Electronica genres CHRIS & COSEY's name is often mentioned by bands and DJs as hugely influential. During the 1980s' and 90s' CHRIS & COSEY went on to record some of the most inventive Electronica albums, including the much sampled and remixed TRANCE album (1982), the Techno Pop classic OCTOBER-Love Song (1983) and the West Coast and Goa dance floor hit EXOTIKA (1987). During this time they enjoyed great success with record labels such as ROUGH TRADE (UK), PLAY IT AGAIN SAM (Belgium), NETTWERK (Canada) and WAX TRAX (USA). In 1992 after many gruelling tours and for both health and artistic reasons CARTER and TUTTI decided to scale down their live performances and concentrate on studio recordings. They continue to release numerous albums and solo projects through their own Conspiracy Internationallabel (CTI). CARTER and TUTTI have always embraced working with cross media techniques and constantly confound categorisation. They regard themselves not solely as musicians but equally as artists, sound engineers, writers, performers and subcultural collaborators. Since their inception in the 1980s Chris and Cosey have collaborated with such artists and musical luminaries as Robert Wyatt,Monte Cazazza, Coil, Erasure, The Eurythmics, Boyd Rice, Current 93, John Duncan, and many more. Their music has also been remixed by Carl Craig, Andrew Weatherall, Daniel Miller, U -Ziq, Vapourspace, Cosmic Connection, and Fred Giannell. In recent years CARTER and TUTTI have been working on their two CD series: 'The Library Of Sound' and 'Electronic Ambient Remixes'. Music from both these ongoing projects has been used in gallery sound installations, electronic music festivals and exclusive radio broadcasts. The most recent, EAR 4 'SELFLESSNESS' (a 90 min sound piece) was broadcast in its entirety on Resonance FM London on May 2nd 2003. Other recent and current activities by CARTER and TUTTI include the release of C&C LUCHTBAL a live CD album featuring 60 minutes of audio and 17 minutes of performance video, reissues of remastered classic 1980s Chris & Cosey albums and exclusive DJ sets. In addition COSEY has music from her legendary 'Time To Tell' album featured in the trailer for the movie 'The Missing' (directed by Ron Howard and starring Tommy Lee Jones), she can also be heard in interview on in flight entertainment on current British Airways transatlantic flights. In 2003 Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti began DJ'ing, performing and releasing new material using the name CARTER TUTTI. In 2004 the Throbbing Gristle compilation 'Mutant TG' featured two CARTER TUTTI remixes - 'Hamburger Lady' and 'Hot Heels United'. These two tracks were very well received and achieved copious radio and club play. Their UK first live performance as CARTER TUTTI was in the UK at the QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL, SOUTH BANK, LONDON on 9th Oct 2003. This was their first performance in the UK since they played a sell out show as Chris & Cosey at London's Union Chapel in 1999. Following this capacity South Bank performance CARTER TUTTI DJ'd and performed in Scotland, London, Amsterdam and Italy during 2004, while also working on solo projects and completing the first all new Throbbing Gristle album for more than 25 years.
